Post-traumatic vestibular disorders. Diagnosis and treatment

The present paper is a retrospective analysis of 94 patients after an occupational accident. Most of the patients suffered from one vestibular disorder only (59%) and the others from two or more in parallel or subsequently. These disorders included primary ones with an acute onset after the injury (e.g., BPPV, UVL) and secondary ones with a delayed onset (e.g., otolith disorders, delayed endolymphatic hydrops) in 35%. The latter ones had a poorer prognosis which, however, could be improved since last year with new re-hab technologies (neurofeedback training). In the future, the start of treatment should be as soon as possible so that a delay in timing can be prevented. The yellow flags as indicated by the patients' complaints (e.g., dizziness, weakness) should be regarded as specific signs of a vestibular disorder so that the patient can be transferred to a specialized unit with specific diagnostic and therapeutic techniques.
