RESEARCH TRAINING IN PSYCHIATRIC EPIDEMIOLOGY AND BIOSTATISTICS

With Ben Locke's strong encouragement, there are now nine pre- and postdoctoral training programs in psychiatric epidemiology and biostatistics funded by the National Institute of Mental Health. Since the first program started in 1972, 102 doctoral degrees have been awarded by these programs and 226 individuals have completed postdoctoral training. The accomplishments of some outstanding trainees, major program events and the training environments are described. Future training directions are discussed, including technical training needs, formulating questions and recognizing opportunities, and aiming research toward primary and secondary prevention.
