GENDER, RACE AND ETHNICITY - CONCEPTS, REALITIES AND POLICY IMPLICATIONS

This paper outlines the conceptual advances which have been made within social science research on the interdependence of gender and race, and illustrates these with reference to research in an ethnically differentiated region of Costa Rica. It then goes on to point out the need for concerted action on these themes within the policy environment. While accepting that significant strides have been made in addressing gender issues by multi-lateral and hi-lateral policy-making bodies, the paper calls for greater sensitivity to the diversity and interrelations between individuals and groups on a gender and ethnic/racial basis. Not only is it critical to adopt a 'gender-aware' approach to development, but also, and in conjunction, an 'ethnically and racially aware' perspective.
