A detailed numerical study has been carried out to investigate transient natural convection in a binary mixture in square enclosures with the simultaneous presence of temperature and concentration gradients. Results are particularly presented to illustrate the effects of the combined thermal and solutal buoyancy forces on the temporal evolution of the flow pattern and the associated heat and mass transfer for both augmenting and opposing flows. The effects of the buoyancy ratio are found to be rather significant on the flow pattern and heat and mass transfer especially for the opposing flows. © 1990.
