摘要：
A literature review and experimental evaluation has been conducted to determine the effect of volatile fatty acids (VFA) on attached growth anaerobic fermenter performance. The literature review provided limited information establishing proposed relationships between C2-C5 VFAs and fermenter performance. These relationships were then evaluated using experimental data obtained from continuously stirred tank (CST), upflow sludge blanket (USB), and suspended particle-attached growth (SPAG) fermenters. The observed relationships are presented together with their effect on fermenter microbiology and stress-states.
