PERMEABILITY, SOLUBILITY AND DIFFUSION OF GASES IN AMORPHOUS AND CRYSTALLINE 1,4-POLYBUTADIENE MEMBRANES

Permeability, diffusion and solubility coefficients of hydrogen, neon, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide have been determined in amorphous (48% trans) and crystalline (90% trans) 1,4-polybutadiene in the temperature range from 15 to 65° C. The effects of crystallinity on transport estimated by the solubility coefficient ratios (S90% trans/S48% trans) and the diffusion coefficient ratios (D90%trans/D48% trans) are greater than for some larger diffusants studied previously. A mesomorphic (crystal/crystal) transition at about 45° C in the 90% trans polymer produces a sudden increase in the permeability with increasing temperature. © 1979.
