The political development of European coloproctology from 1980 until now is being comprehensively presented. Preparatory actions, foundation and development of the "European Council of Coloproctology" (ECCP) are described as well as the motives for the dissolution of these two unions and the foundation of the "European Society of Coloproctology" (ESCP) demonstrate the willingness of the European coloproctologists to cooperate more strongly - and thus to improve the treament of coloproctologic patients. The readers of coloproctology are called to shape the European development in an even stronger way and to commit themselves to the new society.
