This paper presents a design of a distributed document system. Each document may be distributed among several servers, thus allowing an optimization of the system resources. The distribution is transparent for the user, who sees only a document store. This paper not only discusses the solution of the communication problems between the servers pertaining to the distributed system, but also presents the idea of performing an intelligent distribution of the document among the computers. Therefore, other problems like document fragmentation and resource management are also pointed out. The presented solution is based on the ODA (Open Document Architecture) standard (ISO 8613/CCITT T.410 Series of Recommendations).
