摘要：

This paper aims to depict the social cultural profile of 19th century novel readers in the Brazilian context. In order to achieve our goals, we are going to deal with the relationship between the textual category, reader, and (a) the social function of novel at that period, as well as (b) the ideological values which structure the 19th century social life. We also intend to call attention to the importance of the social historical movement which influenced the discursive practice, with special emphasis on the category "reader".
