FINITE-LENGTH EFFECTS AND STABILITY OF ELECTROMAGNETIC PUMPS

The basic principles of liquid metal induction machines, pumps and generators, are reviewed. Phenomena that limit the energetic efficiency of high-power machines-Joule losses in the liquid metal due to electromagnetic edge waves and flow inhomogeneities created by magnetohydrodynamic instability-are discussed. A linear stability analysis is presented in which, for the first time, edge waves are taken into account. Results are compared with experimental data from three large electromagnetic pumps (Soviet, French, and West German). It appears, surprisingly, that edge waves can either stabilize or destabilize the flow, depending on the characteristics of the induction machines.
