This paper presents the configuration of an inexpensive solar collector which also acts as a heat store. The collector consists of a network of pipes buried in the ground whose surface is blackened and covered with an air filled honeycomb. An analysis of the system design characteristics and heat transfer processes is carried out. In particular, the solar transmittance and heat losses through the honeycomb cover system have been investigated to estimate the solar collection efficiency and heat retention characteristics of the system. The collection efficiency of 30-50%, corresponding to collection temperatures in the range 40-60°C are predicted. The variation of collection efficiency with solar angle of incidence is also investigated. © 1990.
