A total of 289 children from 99 families were examined radiographically to investigate the presence of maternal effect on the developing dentition. The mandibular permanent teeth were assigned scores of dental maturation by the method of Moorrees et al. Birth weight, birth order, and maternal age were used as measures of maternal effects. The results showed that between-family differences in dental development were still significant after adjustments were made for birth weight, etc., by the analysis of covariance. The within-family correlation and regression coefficients between dental development and birth weight and maternal age were low but statistically significant. © 1968.
