BENZOPYRANS .28. REACTION OF 4-OXO-4H-1-BENZOPYRAN-3-CARBOXALDEHYDES WITH PHENYLDIAZOMETHANE

摘要
The reaction of 4-oxo-4H-1-benzopyran-3-carboxaldehyde (1a) and its 6-chloro derivative (1c) with phenyldiazomethane gives the xanthones 14a and 14c, respectively. However, the reaction of 6-methyl-4-oxo-4H-1-benzopyran-3-carboxaldehyde (1b) with phenyldiazomethane under identical conditions furnishes the cyclopropabenzopyran (17) instead of the expected xanthone (14b). Suitable mechanisms have been proposed to explain the formation of these products.
