THE EFFECT OF FLOW PATTERNS ON THE EROSION-CORROSION OF SHELL AND TUBE HEAT-EXCHANGERS

摘要
Results of investigations into the erosion-corrosion problem in shell and tube heat exchangers are reported. Applications of flow visualization studie as well as computations with the k-epsilon-model of turbulence have identified flow features and regions where metal loss is a maximum. Investigation of flow pattern modifiers has led to significantly reduced metal loss as verified by full-scale plant trials. The best solution is obtained by use of a honeycomb insert, which leads to little increase in pressure drop, thus being ssuitable even with saturated liquids where flashing to vapour must be minimized.
