SPINS AND CHARGE-CARRIERS OF CONDUCTING POLYMERS ENCAPSULATED IN ZEOLITES CHANNELS

We are able to encapsulate polypyrrole, polythiophene, polyaniline or polyacrylonitrile within the channels of different zeolites with one- or three-dimensional topology. Optical absorption, ESR and a.c. conductivity (100 to 1000 MHz and 10 GHz) are used to characterize the samples. The chain length is found to be superior to 10 monomers. In the case of polypyrrole, although the chains are fully oxidized by intrazeolite Fe3+ ions and contain bipolaronic charge carriers as well as small concentrations of polarons (about 10(-3) per monomer), they do not exhibit significant a.c. conductivity up to microwave frequencies. This observation as well as the relatively large linewidth of the ESR signal are believed to be due to trapping of polarons and bipolarons by the periodic zeolite framework. The pyrolyzed zeolite/polyacrylonitrile samples show up a complex ESR signal and some microwave conductivity.
