A technique is presented by which surface shear waves can be generated. The technique is applied to surfaces of protein solutions. It is found that the surface motion is described satisfactorily by the theory as developed in the previous paper (J. A. de Feijter, J. Colloid Interface Sci. 69, 375-383, 1979). The results indicate that the surfaces of the protein solutions show viscoelastic shear behavior. The values of the shear parameters, as calculated from the wave characteristics, are of the order to be expected for protein solutions. In principle, surface shear waves can be used to study the shear properties of liquid surfaces. © 1979.
