Cardiovascular Surgery in Spain during 2011. The Registry of the Spanish Society of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery

The Secretary of the Spanish Society of Thoracic-Cardiovascular Surgery presents the annual report of the national registry of activity during the year 2011. In this report we collect interventions carried out during 2011 and sent by 56 national centres. Information was introduced in a questionnaire that was voluntarily sent and analysed by this Secretary ensuring the confidentiality of the data of each Centre. In 2011 a total of 33.970 cardiovascular surgical procedures have been collected in this registry, with a median of 601 surgeries by centre (range, 62-1801). 18.252 interventions were performed under cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) and 20.406 cardiac interventions more, including coronary artery bypass off-pump or congenital surgery without CPB, with an average of 325 hospital surgeries were performed. Divided by type of operation: valvular surgery was 51.2%, isolated coronary surgery 21.94%, combined 12.88%, surgery of the aorta 8.84%, and miscellaneous in 4.43%. There is a trend towards an increase in ascending aorta procedures during the last ten years. In this same way, palliative or corrective procedures on patients with congenital heart disease have experienced an increase (1646 under CPB) and 439 without CPB. Rates of interventions per million inhabitants referred to our country population data published by the National Institute of statistics were also analysed with a total of 398,17 surgeries with extracorporeal and 445,16 major cardiac procedures.
