摘要
The article explores the development of Ayurveda, the traditional medicine of India, in the 19th to the 20th centuries. During this period, thanks to the efforts of Indian 'revivalists', systematised, modernised and professionalised 'modern Ayurveda' was constructed; the medicine is in dialogue with biomedicine and is being constantly reformulated. The article discusses problems and challenges associated with legitimisation, including in scientific terms, of Ayurveda in the context of current dominance of biomedicine and market economy. 'Modern' Ayurveda has a number of important characteristics which allow speaking of the phenomenon of 'neo-traditionalism'.
