GROWTH AND CHARACTERIZATION OF 4-(N,N-DIMETHYLAMINO)-3-ACETAMIDONITROBENZENE BULK CRYSTALS AND SINGLE-CRYSTAL CORED FIBERS

A solution growth method of 4-(N,N-dimethylamino)-3-acetamidonitrobenzene (DAN) crystals based on convective transport in dimethylsulfoxide is presented. Crystals of dimensions up to 15 X 6 X 2 mm3 were produced and found to be of high optical quality. Single crystal cored fibers of DAN were grown in glass capillaries by the inverted Stockbarger technique. X-ray diffraction experiments showed that DAN crystals in glass capillaries have an orientation with the a-[100] crystallographic axis along the fiber axis. This favorable orientation allows the use of the d22, d23 and d34 second-order susceptibility coefficients in nonlinear optical experiments. © 1990, Elsevier Science Publishers B.V..
