PHOMOPSIS SEED-ROT OF FABA BEAN (VICIA-FABA L)

Phomopsis phaseoli (Desm.) Saccardo was observed on rotted seed of Vicia faba L. during the seed health testing. The infected seed was blackened and yellowish conidia-mass was oozed from pycnidia developed under seed-surface. P. phaseoli was isolated from oozed conidia and was grown on different media for characterization. Its pathogenicity was tested on faba bean seedlings and latent infection was detected by spreading the conidia onto leaves. More effective infection was carried out by tooth-pick method by thrusting the picks into the root-necks. This is the first occurrence of P. phaseoli on V. faba in Hungary and the second report on its natural infection on this host.
