Coupled-wave analysis is used to calculate the diffraction of two light beams on a volume phase hologram. The complex amplitudes of the diffracted beams depend strictly on the spatial mismatch of the holographic grating with respect to the interference pattern; this gives the possibility of determining the grating phase shift. Measurements of energy and phase redistribution between two light beams passing through the hologram were used to determine the grating phse shift for DCG gratings and for dynamic gratings in pure reduced LiNbO3 crystals. © 1979 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
