The increased use of liver transplantation for the management of endstage liver disease has resulted in the need for more donors, for more careful selection of recipients, and for reduction or control of postoperative complications if they occur. In this review, selected issues are highlighted, including the use of nonhuman primate donors, the management of biliary complications, and the selection and outcome of patients undergoing liver transplantation as therapy for controversial indications such as chronic hepatitis B and hepatocellular carcinoma.
