Here a simplistic but useful algorithm for the simulation of coupled two-phase fluid flow in porous sediments is described in a quite general form. Thereby it is shown that this algorithm is wellsuited for the description of displacement processes where capillary and/or gravity forces are substantially involved along with the viscous forces. The scheme makes use of a Jacobian Transformation to convert from Eulerian to Lagrangian independent variables. In this way the order of nonlinearity is reduced with the result that the finite difference computations are facilitated in ways that are especially advantageous to workers with limited mainframe computer access. As an illustration, numerical results are presented which underscore the importance of taking coupling effects into account when present. © 1990 International Association for Mathematical Geology.
