CHLORINE AND HYDROGEN EVOLUTION CHARACTERISTICS OF ION-IMPLANTED ELECTRODE MATERIALS

Electrocatalytic features arising from the ion implantation of electrocatalytic ions were investigated by studying the chlorine evolution reaction on Ru implanted Ti, Pt implanted W, Co implanted Pt, and Rh implanted Fe electrodes and by examining the hydrogen evolution reaction on Pt implanted Fe and Ni+ bombarded Ni electrodes. Studies with Ru implanted Ti electrodes as anodes for Cl2 evolution from 5M NaCl solutions at 95°C showed 'transient' electrocatalytic effects, masked by passivity due to the anodic TiO2 film formation. Evidence of catalytic activity by enhancement of surface area was noted during the course of hydrogen evolution on Ni+ bombarded Ni electrodes from alkaline solution at 95°C. Reduced corrosion rate of Fe was observed via Pt implantation in Fe in 15% NaOH + 17% NaCl solutions at 95°C.
