An overview of a study examining pedagogic work with children with behavioral disorders within kindergarten settings

This paper presents the results of a questionnaire survey examining the daily work of kindergarten and preschool teachers with children with behavioral disorders. These children often pose a challenge to early childhood teachers, but there are currently no empirical studies and evaluated concepts available to help them in their daily routine. 101 preschool teachers from four German states took part in the written survey. The survey included questions as to their "idea" of behavioral disorders, the identification of behavioral disorders, and the educational approaches used with children with special behavior (and their parents). Furthermore, they were asked about their need of support. The results indicate that only the minority of kindergartens and preschools have an educational concept in place for their daily work with children with behavioral disorders. However, the survey participants identified a number of solutions including the work with parents and cooperation with other services, e.g., early support centers. Still the teachers clearly expressed their need for support, asking especially for more training, supervision/counseling, and improved working conditions.
