A DRUNG-TYPE MAGNETOMETER MOUNTED ON A GM CRYOCOOLER

We developed a compact, light, highly reliable biomagnetic measurement system which uses Drung-type SQUIDS and a Gifford-McMahon (GM) cycle cryocooler. The GM cryocooler, containing erbium-3 nickel (Er3Ni) as a magnetic regenerative material, cooled the SQUID to 5.1 K without a Joule-Thomson (JT) circuit. The intensity of the magnetic noise was about 30-40 pTpp in the SQUID cooling stage when evaluated in a magnetically shielded room. This noise was eliminated by applying a 'template' noise reduction technique. Magnetocardiogram (MCG) and magnetoencephalogram (MEG) measurements were demonstrated with this new system.
