Special grades of steel and a corresponding heat treatment technology have been developed for the side members of KamAZ (Kama River Truck Plant) trucks. To avoid double heat treatment, the authors proposed a normalization regime with slower cooling in the initial stage. The metal was heated to 930-970 degree C at a rate of 2. 1-3. 0 deg C/sec, held at these temperatures, cooled to 630-700 degree C at a rate of 1-1. 5 deg C/sec in the furnace, and cooled in air. Decomposition of the austenite while the metal was in the furnace ensured the formation of a ferritic-pearlitic structure with high ductility and sufficient strength.
