OPENING THE CLASSROOM CLOSET - SEXUAL ORIENTATION AND SELF-DISCLOSURE

Guided by a feminist perspective on self-disclosure, I examine coming out in the classroom. I discuss heterosexism in family pedagogy and identify the costs of heterosexual privilege. I also propose teaching strategies for incorporating accurate information about sexual orientation in family courses: upgrading knowledge about sexual orientation, creating writing opportunities for teachers and students, including multiple representations of lesbians and gays, and providing departmental support for all citizens.
