THE ETIOLOGY OF juvenile herniated nucleus pulposus of the lumbar intervertebral disc is still controversial. Traumatic, nutritional, and genetic factors have been proposed as causes of intervertebral disc herniation in the young.6-12 In this article, we describe our experience with sibling monozygotic twins with lumbar intervertebral disc herniation and discuss the etiology of juvenile herniated nucleus pulposus from the genetic viewpoint. © Lippincott-Raven Publishers.
