Extraintestinal manifestations commonly involve most organ systems and may complicate the management of patients, as well as be a significant source of morbidity and mortality. Many extraintestinal manifestations not only correlate with the specific disease but also with the location, extent, and degree of activity. Most manifestations found in patients with inflammatory bowel disease involving the small intestine appear to correlate with some underlying pathophysiologic mechanism.
