IMAGE-ENHANCEMENT OF X-RAY TOPOGRAPHS BY FOURIER FILTERING

Fourier filtering has been applied to the enhancement of x-ray topographic images either directly digitized with a television camera or recorded on films. The transfer function of the filter, in Fourier space, is chosen to avoid artefacts. Their shape, either circular or elliptic, allows various kinds of filtering: to suppress a varying background in the images, to enhance the visibility of small details such as dislocations, to study a particular set of fringes or to extract a component in a complex image. Examples from a study of quartz resonators are shown.
