THERMAL-STABILITY OF AL65CU20FE15 QUASI-CRYSTAL STUDIED BY X-RAY-DIFFRACTION AND MOSSBAUER-EFFECT MEASUREMENTS

The temperature dependence of the mean-square displacement of Fe atoms in an as-quenched Al65Cu20Fe15 alloy in the temperature range of 4.2-1023 K has been measured by means of the Mossbauer spectroscopy. The vibrational behavior of the Fe atoms below 673 K can be well described using the Debye approximation with THETA(D) = 389 K. Above about 673 K, the Al65Cu20Fe15 alloy decomposes into Al2Cu3 and Al13Fe4. However, the rate of decomposition slows down, when the phason strains in the as-quenched Al65Cu20Fe15 alloy are released above around 903 K. In the present work, we confirm that the icosahedral phase in the Al65Cu20Fe15 alloy is not a stable equilibrium state above about 673 K.
