A DIELECTRIC SPECTROSCOPIC STUDY OF FATTY-ACID AMINE COMPLEXES IN SOLUTION

Dielectric properties of butylamine (B)/butanoic acid (A) and hexylamine (B)/hexanoic acid (A) systems have been determined. It is shown that the acid (A)/base (B) complexation passes via an A3B1 state before a final A1B1 complexation is obtained at approximately equal molar ratios. The complexation is accompanied by a considerable increase in relaxation time (tau), static permittivity (epsilon-s), and distribution factor (alpha). Decomplexation at excess contents of amine substantially decreases the same dielectric parameters. Dilution with n-heptane influences the stoichiometry of the acid/base complexes at excess acid contents toward more 1/1 centered complexes.
