DETERMINATION OF IRON VALENCE IN OXIDES AND SULFIDES BY EPMA

摘要
In simple iron oxides the FeLbeta/Lalpha ratio clearly reflects the iron valence. In substituted Fe-oxides the ratio varies widely according to amount and type of substituted metal. In Fe monosulphides, carbides, phosphides and metallic iron the FeLbeta/Lalpha ratio is consistently antipathetic to reflectivity. The relationship is represented by a stright line. It is suggested that the FeLbeta/Lalpha ratio in Fe monosulphides, carbides, phosphides and metallic Fe measures a contribution of covalent (ionic) versus metallic bonding.
