摘要
Counter-propagating beams in a Kerr medium can become unstable to transverse modulation, with a complex interplay of nonlinearity and diffraction. We present a linear stability analysis for an idealized medium consisting of equally-spaced thin Kerr slices, and threshold curves for up to five slices. The features of the curves show gradation towards the threshold for the continuous limit but retain some effects of discreteness which may be significant for numerical simulations and for possible experiments. © 1990.
