RHODOPSEUDOMONAS-ROSEA SP-NOV, A NEW PURPLE NONSULFUR BACTERIUM

A pink-pigmented photoheterotrophic bacterium was isolated from lake sediment. This strain, strain 941T (T = type strain), was characterized and was found to belong to the genus Rhodopseudomonas on the basis of morphology, sessile budding mode of multiplication, and the lamellar arrangement of the internal photosynthetic membranes. Strain 941T consistently formed pink cultures, could not utilize straight-chain saturated fatty acids containing five or more carbon atoms as electron donors for photoheterotrophic growth, and was distinct from the previously described members of the genus. Strain 941 ( = DSM 5909) is the type strain of a new species, Rhodopseudomonas rosea.
