Poverty rates in Lithuania arc high both in urban and in rural areas. However, statistical data show that poverty is more widespread in the countryside. Poverty is a very dangerous phenomenon because it influences not only individuals, but also the society as a whole. Currently Lithunia is a member of the EU, therefore Lithuanians got an opportunity to profit from the European funds. For this reason the facilities, country touring, trainings arc more expanded than earlier. Unfortunately, rates of poverty remain almost the same. The reasons for this phenomenon are various: unemployment, low level of education, low disposable incomes, undeveloped facilities, lack of information, and others. The measures to cope with poverty are the same for urban and rural areas. However, if we want to attain good results, we need to find means to deal with the specific rural problems. In this article the following measures were discussed: Rural communities. Social companies. Tourism in rural areas, Social services. Consulting, giving the information, trainings for villagers, We need such measures because the effects of poverty are severe. Poverty gives wide rates of emigration, social exclusion, discontent with life, conflicts in families, and ageing problem becomes more relevant.
