摘要
The historical development of the polyurethane industry is briefly summarized from its beginnings in 1937 to the present day.The health hazards of the isocyanate monomers and prepolymers in current U.K. industrial use are discussed, with examples drawn from HM Factory Inspectorate and Employment Medical Advisory Service experience. Recent published papers regarding acute and chronic effects of isocyanate inhalation and their possible significance in terms of current and/or proposed industrial hygiene standards are reviewed. In this context, the legal obligations placed on U.K. users of organic isocyanates by the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Factories Act 1961 are set out, with some examples of the various methods of process control by which safe working conditions may be achieved. © 1979 British Occupational Hygiene Society.
