The development of real-time solutions for time-delay (TDE) estimation problems is addressed. Two solutions using adaptive digital filters are evaluated. One is based on the well-known Least Mean Squares (LMS) algorithm (LMSTDE) and the other is a novel algorithm using gradient adaptive lattice structures as pre-whitening filters followed by an LMS time-delay estimator (GALTDE). The filters are implemented on a Texas Instruments TMS320-C25 system and detailed performance comparisons are given. The GALTDE is shown to have far lower dependence on the eigenvalue structure of the input correlation matrix, and consistently outperforms LMSTDE over a range of input signal types and SNR conditions. © 1992.
