Although anonymity is enshrined in law in France, this is far from the case in all European countries. It has been relinquished since 1985 in Sweden and more recently in the UK. The transition phase in the UK is highlighted, and available evidence on the effects on the number of donors analysed, as well as the ethical and legal background for donors, recipients, and offspring.
