The optimum output coupling coefficient for an optically pumped gas laser has been evaluated using a rate equation approach. The theoretical study takes into account the spatial variation of the gain distribution, the self-absorption of the laser emission, the depletion of the pump beam, and the effects of superfluorescent emission on the performance of the laser. Our calculations indicate that a considerable increase in the output laser energy density can be achieved under conditions of reduced superfluorescent emission, by a proper choice of the output coupling coefficient.
