ION-IMPLANTATION INDUCED CONDUCTIVITY CHANGES IN POLYPHENYLENE

Films of 0.5-0.8-mu-m thickness highly aromatised crystalline and amorphous polyphenylene were implanted with 40-80 keV ions of various atomic species. These implantations were performed at room and elevated temperatures up to 300-degrees-C. DC surface resistance measurements of samples implanted at high doses and temperatures above the glass transition temperature of the polymer reveal good conduction with conductivity better than 100-OMEGA-1 cm-1. Evidence of ion beam doping when samples are implanted with iodine as opposed to similar implants with xenon is reported and a model for conduction is suggested. These conductivities were stable after few weeks storage in atmosphere. A resistivity increase of about 80% after a period of 20-22 months in atmosphere was noticed in samples implanted with high doses.
