Fucoxanthin is an allenic oarotenoid. Chemical and spectroscopic studies establish its structure as 3′-acetoxy-5,6-epoxy-3,5′-dihydroxy- 6′,7′-didehydro-5,6,7,8,5′,6′-hexahydro-β-caroten- 8-one (15).
