INFLUENCE OF AVILAMYCIN AND TYLOSIN ON RETENTION AND EXCRETION OF NITROGEN IN FINISHING PIGS

The effect of zero, 20 mg Avilamycin/kg and 20 mg Tylosin/kg feed on the N balance at different dietary crude protein concentrations was studied in a balance trial with pigs in the 60-80 kg liveweight category. Crude protein levels were 16.5 %, which met the requirement, or 14 %, which fell short of the requirement. At the 16.5 % protein level only Tylosin raised N retention by 9 %, while Avilamycin had no effect on the N balance. Lowering the dietary protein content to 14 % reduced N retention proportionally. At this level Avilamycin and Tylosin increased N retention by 8 % and 10 % respectively. The rise was primarily due to reduced urinary N excretion There was very little effect on N digestibility. This resulted in an 8 % and 9 % improvement in N utilisation (N retention: N intake) and a 15 % and 18 % lower N excretion in relation to N retention. The improved N utilisation promises a potential saving of dietary protein and the reduced N excretion demonstrates the ecological benefit of these antibiotic growth promoters in the production of finishing pigs.
