摘要
Every year new energetic ingredients appear on the scene due to the considerable effort and skill of the synthesis chemists who pursue them. However, very few molecules have met all the criteria to become a component in a fielded propellant, explosive, or pyrotechnic. The challenges come from a number of different areas: the material must be economically practical and it must have virtues that surpass those of materials already in use. Its superiority may be evidenced in improved performance, lower vulnerability to accidental initiation, better aging characteristics, or greater ease of processing. A few case studies are presented to illustrate the tortuous path that must be followed for new energetic ingredients to reach the goal of being put into use.
