摘要
Laboratory and space tests of a fast-neutron spectrometer that uses a new borated plastic scintillator are described. The sensor is composed of four close-packed rods Of plastic scintillator loaded with 5 mass% of natural boron. Each rod is 7.6 cm in diameter and 20.3 cm long; the total package has a maximum sensitive area of 380 cm2, Weighs 18.2 kg, and draws 10 W. Special features that qualify the detector for many new space and field applications are an inherently rugged design and the capability for: 1) positive neutron identification, 2) high detection efficiency per unit sensor weight; 3) directional resolution; 4) an energy range spanning 0.5 to 20 MeV, 5) moderate energy resolution; 6) long-term operation; and 7) operation under microprocessor control.
