摘要
The aim of this work was to investigate the effect of a flexible component on the permeability of gas barrier coating materials. Core/shell emulsion polymers comprising a lightly cross-linked, flexible poly(n-butyl acrylate) (PBA) core and a poly(vinylidene chloride-stat-acrylonitrile) (PVDC-AN) shell were prepared with 5, 10, 15 and 25 wt% core. The core/shell polymers and a commercial barrier polymer were used to coat sheets of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET). Equipment was constructed to measure the O2 and CO2 permeabilities of PET with and without high barrier coatings. The results for the coatings were treated in terms of a model of dispersed 'rods' of PBA in a medium of PVDC-AN, which indicated a change in morphology from moderately to highly elongated rods between 5 and 10 wt.% PBA.
