Thyroid disease in the elderly is a very common problem. All clinicians should be aware of the atypical presentations of both hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism, as well as the specific problems associated with their therapy. Thyroid cancer is also seen in the elderly, but the specific types and prognosis are frequently different than in younger patients. Multinodular goiter is more frequent in elderly patients, but treatment is not always indicated.
