REFLECTION ELECTRON-ENERGY LOSS SPECTROSCOPY AS A TOOL FOR BULK AND ADSORBATE STUDIES - APPLICATION TO SILICON SURFACES

By an extended introduction the state of the art of REELS (or SEELS) is shortly reviewed and recent achievements will be outlined. Emphasis is laid on possible improvements of the technique which was often used as a fingerprint method, to more quantitative results. The main part describes REEL investigations of hydrocarbon adsorption on silicon especially the adsorption of methane on Si(111) and of methanol on Si(111) and Si(100) surfaces. Loss and difference spectra from valence and core levels will be presented and discussed in view of accompanying Auger and work-function change measurements. The use of REE core loss amplitudes to monitor quantitatively the coverage is suggested.
