Screening tests of binary high-temperature intermetallic compounds showed the Ru-Ta L1(0) structure to have room-temperature impact resistance and high-temperature strength. Twenty alloys based on Ru11 Ta9 have been studied for microhardness, elastic modulus, impact strength, and, in two cases, compressional stress-strain behavior. L1(0) lamallae are commonly seen, and their character on fracture surfaces correlates with relative toughness. The B2 phase is present in some alloys, also a twinned lamellar structure, and the beginnings of a martensitic transformation to the L1(2) form were observed in the transmission electron microscope at 93 K.
